vestibular system

a system in the body that is responsible for maintaining balance, posture, and the body’s orientation in space and plays an important role in regulating locomotion and other movements. It consists of the vestibular apparatus in the inner ear, the vestibular nerve, and the various cortical regions associated with the processing of vestibular (balance) information.

n. a type of society (the literal meaning of this German word) or social group in which people feel relatively isolated from each other. Their relationships are primarily contractual in nature, being guided chiefly by rational self-interest and the logic of the marketplace. Compare Gemeinschaft.
