n. the hollow muscular organ in female mammals in which the embryo develops from the time of implantation until birth. It is connected to the ovaries via the fallopian tubes and to the exterior via the vagina, into which the cervix (neck) of the uterus projects. The endometrium (lining) of the uterus undergoes changes during the menstrual cycle. Also called womb. —uterine adj.
