sense of equilibrium

the sense that enables the maintenance of balance while sitting, standing, walking, or otherwise maneuvering the body. A subset of proprioception, it is in part controlled by the vestibular system in the inner ear, which contains vestibular receptors that detect motions of the head. Also called equilibratory sense; labyrinthine sense; static sense; vestibular sense.
