pressure ulcer
a localized area of cellular death (necrosis) affecting individuals with limited mobility. Pressure ulcers derive from increased pressure on small areas of tissue due to prolonged sitting or lying in one position and most commonly form where bones are close to the skin, such as at the ankles, heels, shoulder blades, elbows, and hips. If untreated, sepsis can develop, which is potentially fatal. Pressure ulcers are the third leading cause of death in individuals with spinal cord injury.
