learned treatise exception

an exception to the hearsay rule (which states that evidence from statements by individuals other than the testifying individual is inadmissible in court) that allows expert witnesses to speak for others if they are reporting an opinion shared by the experts in their field. Therefore, an expert may report findings contained in journal articles or similar published treatises for the purpose of informing the court of the general expert opinion concerning the matter in question.
