biased estimator

biased estimator

a value obtained from sample data that consistently under- or overestimates the true quantity in the larger population of interest. In other words, a biased estimator is one whose value on average differs from the value of the parameter it purports to represent. Also called biased statistic. Compare unbiased estimator.
