play group psychotherapy

play group psychotherapy

a form of analytic group psychotherapy for children 3 to 5 years old (i.e., those in preschool and early elementary school). The therapist provides a variety of play materials (e.g., clay, toys, blocks, figurines) that foster both interaction among group members and the nonverbal expression of impulses, feelings, and thoughts by individuals. During the process, the therapist may request factual information, offer encouragement, or clarify observations. The goal is to enhance the child’s sense of mastery and self-control through appropriate communication and socialization. [introduced in 1943 by Russian-born U.S. psychotherapist Samuel Richard Slavson (1890–1981)]
