nefazodone

n. a multifunctional antidepressant chemically related to trazodone but with some important pharmacological distinctions. It is an antagonist at 5-HT2 serotonin receptors and an inhibitor of both serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake. This combination of actions is thought to be related to the lack of SSRI-like side effects associated with its antidepressant properties. Its sedative effects may be useful in the treatment of depression-related anxiety and insomnia; however, due to the risk of serious hepatic injury associated with nefazodone, it is now rarely used.
