involuntary attention

involuntary attention

attention that is captured by a prominent or salient stimulus—for example, in the peripheral visual field—rather than deliberately applied or focused by the individual. Also called exogenous attention. Compare voluntary attention; postvoluntary attention. See also primary attention.
