primary attention

attention that does not require conscious effort, such as attention to an intense, powerful, or arresting stimulus. In classical psychology, the term is used to denote the basic kind of attention that is common to all animals and the first to develop in humans. Also called passive attention; reflex attention. Compare secondary attention. See also involuntary attention.
