1. the practice of diagnosis.

2. procedures for evaluating how much a model differs from expected patterns and assumptions. For example, diagnostics may reveal how much a set of data departs from assumptions of normality, linearity, and homogeneity of variance, possibly showing skewed, curvilinear, and unequal variances across levels of another variable, respectively. See also regression diagnostics.
