homogeneity of variance

the statistical assumption of equal variance, meaning that the average squared distance of a score from the mean is the same across all groups sampled in a study. This condition must be fulfilled in statistical methods that use a single term to represent how widely scores vary across groups, as with analysis of variance, multiple regression analysis, and other procedures. Also called equality of variance; homoscedasticity. Compare heterogeneity of variance.
