treatment trial

a research study designed to evaluate the effectiveness of an experimental intervention, its possible adverse effects, and other information that would contribute to the decision to use the intervention in the future. During the trial, the experimental intervention is compared with an existing one, which acts as a control. When the intervention being evaluated is a new drug, the term clinical trial is used instead.
