clinical trial

a research study designed to compare a new treatment or drug with an existing standard of care or other control condition (see control group). Trials generally are designed to answer scientific questions and to find better ways to treat individuals who have a specific disease or disorder. Also called clinical study. See also randomized clinical trial.
