tetrachoric correlation coefficient

(symbol: rtet) an index reflecting the degree of relationship between two continuous variables that have both been dichotomized. For example, a researcher may need to correlate pass–fail on a test and graduate–nongraduate from school, where pass–fail is the dichotomization of continuous scores on a test and graduate–nongraduate is a dichotomization of grade point average.
