n. the middle of the three primary germ layers of an animal embryo at the gastrula stage, lying between the ectoderm and endoderm. It develops into cartilage and bone, connective tissue, muscle, blood vessels and blood cells, the lymphatic system, gonads, and the excretory system. —mesodermal adj.
