suboccipital puncture

suboccipital puncture

an alternative procedure to lumbar puncture for obtaining access to the subarachnoid space for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. It involves the insertion of a needle into the cisterna magna through an area near the base of the skull to collect cerebrospinal fluid. Also called cistern puncture.
