subcortical center

any region of the brain at a level below the cerebral cortex that has a particular function or functions. Subcortical centers include the thalamus, hypothalamus, and basal ganglia. Within each subcortical structure may be several special centers, such as nuclei of the hypothalamus that regulate sleep, water balance, protein metabolism, and sexual activity.
