racial socialization

the transmission by parents, caregivers, and other influential people of information, values, and perspectives about their race to children of their race, with the goals of instilling pride in their racial heritage and providing strategies for coping with racism, discrimination, and other barriers to success in mainstream society. This term is usually used in research with African Americans. See also ethnic socialization.

underachiever

underachiever

n. a person who consistently achieves below his or her demonstrated capacity. Underachievement may be specific to an area of study or work, or it may be general. It is more prevalent among boys than girls and is quite common in bright and even gifted children. It is also prevalent among average students and children with special needs. Compare overachiever.
