ethnic socialization

the transmission by parents, caregivers, or others of information, values, and perspectives about their ethnic group to the next generation, with the goals of instilling children with pride in their ethnic heritage and providing them with strategies for coping with ethnic discrimination and other barriers to success in mainstream society. This term is used in reference to research with a number of ethnic groups, including African Americans. See also racial socialization.
