1. deterioration or impairment of cognitive functions in the absence of neurological disorder or disease. The condition may occur, reversibly, in a major depressive episode—particularly among older adults, in which case the preferred term is dementia syndrome of depression—or as a psychological symptom of factitious disorder. It may also occur as a result of a vitamin B deficiency or from delirium.
