prior probability

in Bayesian methods, the likelihood of a certain event occurring as determined from current accumulated knowledge about the phenomenon. For example, a researcher could calculate the prior probability of a couple divorcing within 5 years of marriage based on estimates obtained from census data and previously conducted studies.
