pretest counseling

a type of genetic counseling that an individual undertakes before deciding whether to undergo genetic testing. Pretest counseling includes educating the individual about the contribution of genetics to the etiology of disease, taking a family history and creating a pedigree, estimating risk, and discussing the risks, benefits, and limitations of genetic testing.
