n. a gland, located near the posterior wall of the abdominal cavity, that is stimulated by secretin to secrete pancreatic juice, which contains various digestive enzymes. In addition, small clusters of cells within the pancreas (see islets of Langerhans) function as an endocrine gland, secreting the hormones insulin and glucagon. —pancreatic adj.
