glucagon

n. a polypeptide hormone, secreted by the A cells of the islets of Langerhans, that increases the concentration of glucose in the blood. It opposes the effects of insulin by promoting the breakdown of glycogen and fat reserves to yield glucose. Glucagon is administered therapeutically to relieve symptoms of hypoglycemia.
