orchidectomy

n. the surgical removal of a testis. An orchidectomy may be performed when a testis is injured or diseased, as when the male reproductive system has been affected by cancer. It does not necessarily cause impotence but may reduce the desire for coitus. Orchidectomy performed before puberty can affect the development of secondary male sex characteristics. Also called orchiectomy. See also castration.
