nonparametric test

a type of hypothesis test that does not make any assumptions (e.g., of normality or homogeneity of variance) about the population of interest. Nonparametric tests generally are used in situations involving nominal or ordinal data. Also called distribution-free test; nonparametric hypothesis test. Compare parametric test.
