adj. describing any relationship between two variables (x and y) that cannot be expressed in the form y = a + bx, where a and b are numerical constants. The relationship therefore does not appear as a straight line when depicted graphically. Compare linear.

n. a diagnostic method in which the examiner listens for sounds within the body either with the aid of a stethoscope (mediate auscultation) or directly by laying the ear on the surface of the body (immediate auscultation).
