nicotinic acid

a vitamin of the B complex that serves as an essential precursor of the coenzyme NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) and related coenzymes, which are vital for energy metabolism. In 1937 U.S. biochemist Conrad Arnold Elvehjem (1901–1962) discovered that nicotinic acid can prevent or cure pellagra. Also called niacin.
