neurotrophin

n. any of various proteins that promote the development and survival of specific populations of neurons. Neurotrophins include nerve growth factor, deficits in the axonal transport of which have been linked to Alzheimer’s disease, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which plays a crucial role in cognition, learning, and memory formation by modulating synaptic plasticity. Also called neurotrophic factor.
