keratitis

n. inflammation of the cornea. Keratitis may be deep, as when the infection causing it is carried in the blood or spreads to the cornea from other parts of the eye; or superficial, as when caused by bacterial or viral infection or by an allergic reaction. See also Cogan’s syndrome.
