inhibitory conditioning

classical conditioning in which the presence of a conditioned stimulus denotes the absence of an unconditioned stimulus that has a preexisting excitatory context. That is, the unconditioned stimulus must be one to which the organism has been exposed previously; otherwise, its absence would have no importance. Compare excitatory conditioning.
