in transformational generative grammar, a subordinate clause in a complex sentence. According to this analysis, the complex sentence The dog chased the squirrel that stole the peanut has a deep structure consisting of two sentences, The dog chased the squirrel and The squirrel stole the peanut. In its surface structure, the second sentence is embedded within the first.
