hypoxyphilia

n. sexual fantasy involving arousal obtained by reduction of oxygen flow to the brain. It is a paraphilia usually involving one person alone (i.e., autoerotic asphyxia) but occasionally involving sexual partners (i.e., asphyxophilia). Methods and tools used to achieve arousal include, among others, strangulation by rope, smothering by means of a plastic bag over the head, hanging, and breathing in an anesthetic. Highly dangerous, hypoxyphilia results in numerous fatalities.
