hemoglobinopathy

n. any of various inherited disorders associated with genetic defects in the characteristics of hemoglobin. A common effect of hemoglobinopathies is anemia, which may be severe in homozygous individuals and mild in heterozygous carriers. Sickle-cell anemia and Cooley’s anemia are examples of hemoglobinopathies.
