a theoretical perspective postulating that attitudes are formed to serve one or more different functions and that these functions can influence such processes as attitude change and attitude–behavior consistency. See also ego-defensive function of an attitude; knowledge function of an attitude; social-adjustive function of an attitude; utilitarian function of an attitude; value-expressive function of an attitude.
