foraging

n. the process of searching for, locating, capturing, and processing food for ingestion or for provisioning young. For example, fruit-eating animals must locate trees containing fruit ripe enough to eat and often process the fruit by removing husks or seeds prior to ingestion. Optimal foraging theory provides a framework for predicting the costs and benefits of different decisions about where to forage and for how long.
