focusing

focusing

n. in experiential psychotherapy, a process in which the therapist guides a client to focus silently on the experience of a problem or symptom in a relaxed and nonjudgmental way, often with eyes closed. The client explores intuitively what the problem or symptom is about, without attempting to analyze or control thought processes. The method is believed to lead the client to deeper feelings and greater insight about and peace with the problem or symptom. [developed by U.S. philosopher and psychologist Eugene T. Gendlin (1926–  )]
