ecological fallacy

a mistaken conclusion drawn about individuals based on findings from groups to which they belong. For example, if a university administrator found that the correlation between faculty salary and number of publications at the departmental level was strong and positive (e.g., r = .60), it would be an ecological fallacy to assume that for any particular faculty member the correlation would be the same.
