diabetic retinopathy
deterioration of the retina as a complication of diabetes mellitus, marked by tiny aneurysms of the retinal capillaries. These first appear as small venous dilations and red dots, observed during ophthalmological examination; they progress to retinal hemorrhages and exudates that impair vision. New, abnormal vessels may form in the vitreous cavity and may also hemorrhage. Detached retina is a complication. Treatment includes control of diabetes and hypertension, laser photocoagulation, and vitreous surgery.
