configural learning

learning to respond to two or more stimuli on the basis of their combination rather than on the individual experience of any of those stimuli alone. For example, if neither a tone nor a light presented separately is followed by food, but a tone–light combination is, configural learning has occurred when a conditioned response is elicited by the tone–light combination.
