color constancy

the tendency to perceive a familiar object as having the same color under different conditions of illumination. For example, a red apple will be perceived as red in well or poorly illuminated surroundings. Color constancy is an example of perceptual constancy. Compare brightness constancy; object constancy; shape constancy; size constancy.
