categorization

n. the process by which objects, events, people, or experiences are grouped into classes on the basis of (a) characteristics shared by members of the same class and (b) features distinguishing the members of one class from those of another. Theories of categorization include the prototype model, exemplar theory, and the family resemblance hypothesis. Also called classification. See also abstraction; conceptualization. —categorize vb.
