between-groups variance

the variation in experimental scores that is attributable only to membership in different groups and exposure to different experimental conditions. It is reflected in the analysis of variance by the degree to which the several group means differ from one another and is compared with the within-groups variance to obtain an F ratio. Also called between-subjects variance.
