athyreosis

n. a form of hypothyroidism found in newborns in whom the thyroid gland has failed to develop normally. Affected children either have no thyroid gland or a gland that is abnormally small and whose essential elements are replaced by fibrous tissue. Also called athyreotic cretinism. See also cretinism.
