hypothyroidism

n. underactivity of the thyroid gland, resulting in underproduction of thyroid hormones and a consequent decrease in metabolic rate. Manifestations include fatigue, weakness, and weight gain and other physical problems. Dysphoria, depression, and psychosis can be seen in more severe forms. Compare hyperthyroidism.
