analytic rules

the three rules laid down by Sigmund Freud for conducting psychoanalytic therapy: the basic rule of free association, which is the instruction to say everything that comes to mind and is assumed to give free reign to the unconscious to bring repressed impulses and experiences to the surface; the rule of abstinence, which discourages gratifications that might drain energy that could be utilized in the therapeutic process; and the rule against acting out feelings and events instead of talking them out.
