actual neurosis

actual neurosis

in the classical psychoanalytic theory of Sigmund Freud, a neurosis that stems from current sexual frustrations (e.g., coitus interruptus, otherwise incomplete sexual experience, forced abstinence), as contrasted with one that stems from past experiences or psychological conflicts. The term, originally applied primarily to anxiety neurosis and neurasthenia, has more recently been used to describe a preexisting psychological (i.e., actual neurotic) structure that makes some victims of trauma vulnerable to developing posttraumatic stress disorder.
