abstract attitude

a cognitive style that involves the ability to grasp essentials and common properties, to keep different aspects of a situation in mind and shift from one to another, to predict and plan ahead, and to think symbolically and draw conclusions. These capacities are often impaired in people with certain neurological or psychological disorders. Also called categorical attitude. Compare concrete attitude. See also abstract thinking.
