Yates’s correction for continuity

an adjustment made to a chi-square test of data from a contingency table having only two columns and two rows of information. The Yates’s correction yields a more conservative chi-square statistic and improves the test’s accuracy by accounting for the fact that it uses a continuous distribution to approximate a discrete distribution. [Frank Yates (1902–1994), British statistician]
